Military veterans have a whole host of unique experiences, stressors, and traumas as a consequence of military training, deployment, and reintegration. The purpose of this presentation is to train mental health providers to understand the cultural context of military veterans and why they might be seeking treatment in the community rather than in a VA setting.

Method: Lecture; discussion.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand why a veteran might prefer to receive care at a community mental health organization, like WJCS, rather than the VA.
• Identify three common training experiences most veterans have and how those experiences might be relevant for establishing the context to discuss areas of clinical relevance.
• Identify three content areas of clinical relevance to cover when interviewing a veteran to learn about their military history.
• Identify two do’s and two don’ts when interviewing a veteran about their experiences in the military.
