This year the WJCS Compeer program, a supportive friendship program in which each volunteer is matched with an individual recovering from mental illness, celebrates its 50th anniversary. By facilitating friendships, Compeer helps mental health clients feel less isolated and more integrated into their communities.
Compeer started as a small program in upstate New York and has grown into an international organization with over 40 chapters. Compeer volunteers commit to spending time with a mental health client for a year or more. Research has shown that most Compeer clients see improvements in multiple areas of their lives as a result of their participation.
WJCS is proud to have sponsored a Compeer chapter since 1986. We have seen beautiful, rewarding relationships between our clients and volunteers flourish over the years. Our Compeer volunteers and clients enjoy a wide variety of activities together, including dining out, and going to the movies, theatre, and sports events. Our Compeer chapter hosts group activities, including concerts, films, concerts, and meetings so that participants have opportunities to meet others in the program.
We look forward to many more years of helping to change lives through the power of friendship. We have an ongoing need for volunteers, as individuals seeking Compeer matches continue to be referred to us. If you are interested in becoming a Compeer volunteer, and are willing to make a yearlong commitment to befriend a person in mental health treatment, pllease contact Laura Stein, LMSW, Compeer Coordinator at (914) 761-0600 x2208; [email protected].
