The WJCS Autism Center offers special education advocacy services for families of children with any type of disability, including (but not limited to) learning disabilities, attentional issues, emotional disturbances, and autism. We help parents navigate the special education system, identify and understand their child’s unique needs, and to feel more empowered in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 process.
Services include: an initial consultation, which encompasses a record review, a discussion of parental rights, and the development of a detailed plan as to how to proceed. Discussion topics may include: how to develop a more inclusive/less restrictive educational setting, accessing assistive technology, accommodations and modifications in the classroom, developing transition plans, and self-advocacy for students. The initial consultation may include information about additional services accessible at home and from the community, including Department of Mental Health (DMH) and Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).
We also offer classroom observations and representation at 504, Committee on Special Education (CSE), and Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meetings and help with any needed follow up.
