Gambling and Other Behavioral Addictions: What Clinicians Need to Know

Behavioral addictions include gambling, sex addiction, internet gaming disorder, shopping addiction and food addictions, however the DSM-5-TR only recognizes gambling and internet gaming addiction within this category. This session will cover a wide swath of these addictions, distinguishing between compulsive behaviors and behavioral addictions, reviewing common mechanisms, and will provide an overview of how to assess for and treat behavioral addictions. This discussion will also include reviewing medications used to treat behavioral addictions. Common co-occurring mental health concerns will be explored as well. Time for questions will be available after the presentation.

- Participants will learn common mechanism pathways for the development of behavioral addictions
- Participants will learn how to assess for behavioral addictions
- Participants will learn what evidence-based treatments and treatment modalities are most efficacious for the treatment of behavioral addictions
- Participants will learn to identify common co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.
