Description: Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up the body’s systems that include substances such as cocaine, amphetamines, and more. They can make a person feel more awake, alert, confident or energetic, and can also be accompanied by a number of health and mental health concerns. This training will provide an overview of these various substances comprising this category of drugs, their intoxication and withdrawal symptoms, and co-occurring mental health and physical health concerns. Participants will also gain an understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying stimulant use, the clinical presentation of stimulant use disorders, and effective evidence-based treatment approaches to address stimulant use disorders. Time for questions will be available after the presentation.

Learning Objectives:
• Understand the neurochemical effects of cocaine and stimulants on the brain.
• Identify the acute and chronic effects of cocaine and stimulant use.
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of cocaine and stimulant intoxication and withdrawal.
• Understand the complex interplay between stimulant misuse and co-occurring mental health conditions (co-occurring disorders).
• Learn about effective evidence-based approaches to addressing stimulant use disorder, including psychotherapies and medication assisted treatments.
