This course will explain the indications, practice, and outcomes of ECT in an effort to clarify and destigmatize ECT. Extensive research has found ECT to be highly effective for the relief of major depression. It is also used for other severe mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Method: Lecture, discussion.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn for which mental health conditions ECT is indicated.
  2. Participants will learn how ECT is currently administered.
  3. Participants will learn the results of outcome studies on ECT treatment.
  4. Participants will learn the risks and benefits of ECT.
