Empowerment Planning: Suicide Prevention Safety Planning FOR WJCS STAFF ONLY

This training will review the clinical utility of suicide prevention safety planning and the added relevance of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a contextual behavioral approach, for suicide prevention. The training will specifically describe how an ACT approach can inform steps in the safety planning process when it comes to understanding the emotions and values of high-risk patients. Lastly, this training will explore the relevance of repertoire expansion in the context of crisis management.
Method: Lecture; discussion.
Learning Objectives:
• Select questions to ask patients based on present moment processes to develop clear and specific safety plans.
• Understand the drawbacks to relying exclusively on coping skills for the second step of the safety planning process.
• Identify the relevance of analogical and metaphorical questions that expand the possibilities for values-consistent behavior when developing the safety plan.
