Description:
Novel drugs are synthetic illicit drugs sometimes referred to as designer drugs and are often sold as legal, safe, nondrug products, frequently escaping regulation, resulting in delays in professionals and legislators recognizing their use and impacts. Examples include bath salts, kratom, kava, Phenethylamines, and more. These substances often do not come with recommended dosage or known ingredients due to inconsistent manufacturing and constantly changing composition, making it difficult to know their impacts or risks. Understanding as much as we can about these substances, including their impact on physical and mental health, is critical to workforces working with individuals who are consuming these substances or may be at risk for consuming these substances. This session will provide an overview of these various substances comprising this category of drugs, their intoxication and withdrawal symptoms, and co-occurring mental health and physical health concerns. Time for questions will be available after the presentation.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate between the novel substances of abuse and routes of administration.
- Identify the signs and symptoms associated with intoxication and withdrawal.
Articulate the addictive and long-term risks of use of novel substances of abuse
