Psychopharmacology and Co-Occurring Disorders: What Clinicians Need to Know

This 1.5-hour training will introduce attendees to the concept of co-occurring disorders- the co-occurrence of one or more mental health and substance use disorders that often act in synergistic ways to exacerbate one another leading to more negative outcomes than if individuals had a substance use or mental health disorder alone. This overview will review the developmental onset and course of co-occurring disorders as well as providing an overview of the research on the pharmacological treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. The training will also will offer a brief overview of the research on evidence-based practices psychotherapies for treating co-occurring disorders
Method: Lecture, discussion, and role-play.
Learning Objectives:
• Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of co-occurring disorders.
• Participants will learn how co-occurring disorders differ from having a mental health or substance use disorder alone.
• Participants will learn the research outcomes on the efficacy of psychotropic medications in the context of co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.
