Integrated Trauma and Substance Use Treatment: Using Common Factors in the Context of Substance Use Treatment
ZoomThis course will provide a comprehensive overview of integrated treatment approaches for individuals with co-occurring trauma and substance use disorders. Using Judith Herman, MD’s three-stage model of trauma recovery as a foundational framework, the course will examine the common factors shared across evidence-based trauma therapies, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Special attention will be given to how these models can be applied in the context of integrated co-occurring substance use treatment. Participants will also explore the impact of pre-treatment beliefs, readiness for change, and strategies for assessment—including the use of validated PTSD and substance use screening tools. Through lecture and case-based discussion, participants will develop a trauma-informed, integrative lens for clinical practice.
